> What Can Happen?
Fort Kent weathers the flood with grace, courage and humor, April 30, 2008. Photo courtesy of DPS, original attribution unknown. What Can Happen Here?Mainers can feel lucky. We don't have volcanoes, or tsunamis. Our earthquake threat is less than that of our friends in Califormia -- or Tennessee, for that matter. Our hurricanes are less frequent than Florida's, and usually less violent, too. But wait -- what about bone-chilling winter storms and violent northeasters? How about the hazardous materials stored across town, or being trucked along our roads? How about the destructive floods that tear into some community somewhere, just about every year? We have our share of disasters in Maine. The first step in planning for emergencies is to figure out what might happen -- at your home, your business or organization, your children's school, your community. Then you can move forward to be ready to weather the storm.
